the definition of health

This is the definition of health that guides the practice of Ayurveda. This sloka or Sanskrit verse from the Ayurvedic text Susruta Samhita Sutrasthana states that health arises from:

  1. A balanced relationship of the doshas or energies within the body (mobility, heat, and stability)
  2. Proper Agni which is high functioning digestion
  3. Proper functioning of the bodily tissues
  4. And the proper excretion of waste.
  5. Yet, more important even than these indicators of the health of the body is the health of the mind – peaceful and contented.

Samadosha, samagnischa samadhatumala kriyaha prasanna atmenindriya manaha swasthya ityabhidheeyate. – Acharya Susruta
